Abstract
Aerodynamic instability of flexible bridge decks have been treated by a variety of engineering disciplines, each having its particular terminology. Since flutter is one of the divergenttype oscillations, the onset of flutter directly induces structural failure. Therefore, in the design of long spanned bridges, flutter stability has to be carefully investigated not to excite the flutter oscillation below the designed wind velocity. In this paper, a historical development of flutter instability and simplified approximate method are briefly described. Simplified formulations for estimating the inwind frequencies, damping ratios, and critical wind velocity at varying flexible bridge decks are presented by deduced from impedance matrix of in-wind bridge system.
