Abstract

The H.264/AVC standard adopts zig-zag scanning for encoding the transform coefficients of both intra- and inter-blocks. Since all blocks are scanned in fixed order regardless of local charateristics, zig-zag scanning does not guarantee optimal performance. Proposed is an adaptive coefficient scanning method based on universal prediction for both intra- and inter-blocks. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces bit rate by up to 5.07% and outperforms conventional methods significantly.
