Abstract

The degradation of a 10 year service-aged underground distribution cable was studied by characterizing both insulation and shields. The insulation near the insulation shield shows a drastic increase of acid carbonyl group and a drastic decrease of oxidation induction time. Various impurities such as Ca, Na, Mg, K, Fe, Cu, Al, Ni, and so on were detected in both conductor and insulation shields. The insulation shield has higher impurity content than the conductor shield. All these facts suggest that the insulation edge at the insulation shield side is degraded considerably.
