Abstract
The clogging phenomena of geotextile filters located between the ground composed of residual soils and the lining of a tunnel were studied in this paper. The in-place flow characteristics of two typical weathered residual soils in Korea - Shinnae-dong soil and Poi-dong soil - through the filters were determined with varying normal stresses applied on the filters and with various hydraulic gradient conditions. The effect of the ratio of the effective pore size of geotextile to the particle size of base soil on the clogging phenomena was studied and clogging criteria for the in-plane flow of the residual soils through geotextile filters were proposed. Finally, the water carrying capacity of a tunnel drainage system was assessed with the consideration of clogging phenomena.
