Earthquake simulation tests on a 1:5 scale 9-story piloti-type RC residential building model

    Abstract

    This paper presents the results of shaking table tests on a 1:5 scale 9-story RC piloti-type residential building model. The following conclusions are drawn based on the test results: (1) The over-strength under the maximum considered earthquake in Korea are approximately 3.6 in the X direction and 2.4 in the Y direction, respectively, when compared with the design seismic load. (2) The maximum inter-story drift ratio (IDR), 0.61% occurs not at the piloti story but at the fourth to fifth story, which is far less than the IDR limit given in KBC 2005, 1.5%. (3) Approximately 80% of the total base shear is resisted by the central portion of the walls of the elevator hall and stair case, while most of the torsional moment is resisted by the exterior frame with infilled wall. And, (4) on the contrary to common expectation that cracks and damages would concentrate on the piloti story, a number of horizontal cracks were observed, not only at the piloti story, but also throughout several stories above the transfer plate.
