Abstract

In this study, stress intensity factors are calculated using the XFEM method provided by ABAQUS, and the effect of mesh density is analyzed to evaluate stress intensity factor. For the analysis configuration, a plate with a semi-elliptical surface crack is considered. Prior to the crack evaluation using the XFEM method, results using the crack tip mesh method are obtained for verification against the RES-M code results and are used as reference values for comparison. It was found that the two methods of crack evaluation can produce similar results for all cases, provided that the ratio of the minimum crack dimension and the mesh size is above twenty.
