EFFECTS OF CATALYST LOADING ON THE PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT OF PEMFCS APPLYING A MAGNETIC FIELD

Abstract

In this study, the performance improvement of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by applying a magnetic field was revealed according to the catalyst loading. A unit H2-air PEMFC was tested at catalyst loadings of 0.5 mgpt cm-2 and 0.03 mgpt cm-2. The performance of a PEMFC increased by applying a magnetic field in both high and low catalyst loading conditions. However, the increasing rate in the performance was significantly higher in the high catalyst loading than in the low loading. The magnetic field effectively increased the catalyst utilization, and the performance improvement as a result of increased catalyst utilization was more effective in high catalyst loading. In conclusion, it is more effective to apply a magnetic field to PEMFCs at high catalyst loading than at low catalyst loading.
