Effects of solvent extraction on electrical properties of LDPE

    Abstract

    The role of small polyethylene chains in the space charge operation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is studied. Three PEs having similar melt index and density are used. One is from the tubular process and the other two are from the autoclave process. Small chains are removed from the PE in xylene at temperatures of 50°C-72°C for 48h. The molecular weights and conduction currents of the extracted samples are measured. Spatial charge distributions are measured by a pulsed electroacoustic method. From the results, the type of charge is different for various PEs. The solvent extraction may reduce the charge in some PEs, but not all. The solvent extraction reduces conduction currents but not the conduction mechanisms. These results suggest that the role of small chains in the creation of charge may be different.
