The use of a high-power violet laser diode (LD) for magneto-optical trapping (MOT) of Yb atoms was analyzed. The MOT of fermionic and bosonic Yb isotopes was completed by employing an injection-locked violet LD with a 25-mW frequency-stabilized output. The cloud temperatures for Yb isotopes, obtained by measuring fluorescence intensity ratio, were found above the Doppler limit of 670 μK. A 35-fold increase in the number of trapped atoms was achieved due to the one-dimensional slowing of an Yb atomic beam without a Zeeman slower. The loss time, the loading time, and the cloud temperature characteristics of violet MOT were determined as 1s, 400 ms, 0.7 mk respectively.
