Abstract

Endoergic reaction channels of C(3P) with CH4 and C2H2 have been studied by using free laser ablation of graphite for preparation of hyperthermal (>2 eV) C(3P). Energy distributions in the CH products are determined and compared with those obtained in other reactions of C(3P). It is suggested that both reactions proceed via carbene intermediates, but the specific mechanisms of the two reactions are different.
