Abstract

H.264 uses an intra prediction mode with 4×4 block and 16×16 block sizes for luma component and 8×8 block size for chroma component to improve the rate-distortion performance. However, the computational complexity of H.264 encoder is drastically increased due to the various intra prediction modes. In this paper, we propose a novel fast H.264 intra prediction mode selection scheme in P-frames. The proposed method uses the temporal correlation between the intra predicted block in the current frame and the corresponding block in its reference frames. This proposed method can reduce the computational complexity while maintaining similar PSNR and bit rate. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is very similar to the original full-search with reducing complexity about 59%.
