Abstract
A fast block-motion-estimation algorithm, based on progressive partial norm matching, is proposed. This fast algorithm obtains the best estimate of motion vectors with a significantly reduced computational load by successively exploiting the partial norms of the variable partitioned subblocks and thus effectively eliminating invalid search points. Simulation results demonstrate that computation time has been reduced dramatically, while the performance of the proposed algorithm is the same as that using an exhaustive search.
