Abstract
Femtosecond solvent dynamics in acetonitrile and methanol have been studied by both time resolved fluorescence and transient birefringence experiments. Introducing a spectral density of Brownian solvent oscillators allows comparison of the two experiments and reveals the elementary liquid motions responsible for the ultrafast dynamics. We report the first observation of a large observation of a large inertial contribution of the solvent response in methanol and confirm the existence of a large inertial contribution in acetonitrile.
