    Abstract

A wbpO gene encoding a putative UDP-N-acetyl-D-galactosamine dehydrogenase was identified and cloned from Vibrio vulnificus. LPS production was altered by disruption of the wbpO gene through allelic exchanges. The function of the wbpO gene in virulence assessed in vitro and in mice revealed that WbpO is important in both the pathogenesis of V. vulnificus and the biosynthesis of LPS.
