Abstract

Surface functional groups and chemical changes in surfaces of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes during operation were identified. XPS and SEM with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) were used to map the surface topography and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) was utilized to validate XPS results. The possible mechanisms of membrane failures observed during the pilot membrane study was delineated.
