Abstract

We propose a generic augmented reality (AR) framework supported by a simple extension to the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure called the «ARIoT». Through ARIoT, (1) potential target objects (or «things») are dynamically identified in the working space, (2) important feature information are obtained and thereby enable fast recognition and spatial tracking, and (3) generic interactive contents are retrieved and augmented as a service to the client. In addition, individual IoT objects can be enriched with additional contents for specific services. We demonstrate the utility of ARIoT in realizing in-situ AR manuals for home appliances which often require object-centered illustrations. ARIoT is a natural evolution of the bare IoT for improved interactivity using AR.
