Intrinsic optical signals in neural tissues: Measurements, mechanisms, and applications

    Abstract

    Signaling phenomena in nerve tissues are accompanied by a number of intrinsic optical signals, including changes in absorption, scattering, birefringence, refractive index, and mechanical motions. We review these signals, various techniques for their measurement, possible mechanisms for their origin, and discuss their present and potential applications in functional neural imaging.
