    Abstract

Rising interest in automotive exhaust gas problems has triggered active researches on eco-friendly automobiles. A variable compression ratio (VCR) engine is one of the eco-friendly automotive technologies. The VCR engine increases compression ratio at low load region to improve thermal efficiency, while it decreases compression ratio in high load region to prevent knocking, which can decrease exhaust emissions and increase fuel-economy. In this paper, a new variable compression ratio engine mechanism with multiple joints is developed via a systematic kinematic approach. For this, the kinematic graphs of mechanisms wiht 7 links and 8 joints are enumerated and the most sitable mechanisms are selected. By mering the joints, a new VCR engine mechanism type is proposed and analyzed.
