Abstract

Since the conventional tunnelling method or NATM was introduced in 1982, it has always remained more popular in Korea than the mechanized tunnelling method. More than 90 % of the total length of tunnels in the Korean peninsula have been designed and constructed according to the NATM. The Korean practice of utilization of the NATM will be discussed in this paper, focusing on the main characteristics of Korean practice and technical issues.
