    Abstract

The objective of this study was to improve the removal efficiency of decolorization and mineralization of reactive black 5 (RB5) by the combination of the sonochemical process and the Fenton process. In the combined process, the RB5 was almost removed and the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) increased. This means that H 2O2 and Fe2+/Fe3+ were reactive continuously. The color was almost removed because the azo bonds are broken down prior to the benzene ring bonds for OH radical. The COD/TOC ratio decreased, implying that the average oxidation state of carbon increased, and the form of RB5 was thus changed from aromatic structures to aliphatic structures.
