Abstract
A model for the excitonic absorption spectrum of quantum wells is presented that includes intersubband scattering and the interaction of bound and continuum excitonic states. This model is applied to the case of a quantum well subjected to uniaxial stress. For a certain region of stress a strong mixing of the ground (1s) state of the first light-hole exciton (11lh) and the excited (2p) state of the second heavy-hole exciton (12hh) is found. Furthermore, the 11hh continuum states mix strongly with these excitons and contribute substantially to the absorption. Very good quantitative agreement is obtained with experiment.
