A uniformly quantized symbol error probability model was proposed to investigate the estimation of bit error rate (BER) for optical transmission systems with forward error correction (FEC) coding. The model was verified using Monte Carlo simulations and measurements. The measured BER characteristics using the RS (255,239) FEC coding were found to be similar to the simulated ones calculated through the proposed method. The model provided an effective way to calculate BER characteristics using FEC coding within reasonable time and high accuracy.
