    Abstract

The Shear Strength of Jointed Rock is Influenced by Effective Norm. Stress, Jt. Wall Compressive Strength and Jt. Roughness. since Jt. Roughness Has Considerable Influence on the Shear Strength of Jointed Rock, Many Studs. Have Been Conducted to Get A Quantit. Jt. Roughness Value. until Now, Jt. Roughness Coefficient (JRC) Proposed by Barton Has Been Prevalently Used as A Rock Jt. Roughness Parameter in Spite of Its Inherent Disadvantages. in This Stud., A Quantification of Rock Jt. Roughness is Performed Using the Surf. Roughness Parameter, Rs and the proposed method is applied to rock core specimens. Based on the quantification of joint surface roughness, joint shear tests are performed with the portable shear box. The relationship between joint surface roughness and joint shear strength is investigated and finally, a new peak shear strength criterion for rock joints is derived from these results. The criterion has considerable credibility and originality in that it is obtained from laboratory tests and expressed with quantified roughness parameters.
