Modified bang-bang vibration control strategy applied to adaptive nonuniform cantilevered beams

    Abstract

    A modified bang-bang control strategy applied to a cantilevered thin-walled beam oscillating when is exposed to a time-dependent pressure pulse is presented. This control methodology is accomplished in conjunction with the use of the smart materials technology. In this sense, the piezoactuators are used to generate, as the result of the out-of-phase actuation, a bending control moment. The piezoactuators in the form of patches or spread all over the beam span are bonded on the opposite external surfaces of the beam. The input voltage is subject to a maximum value constraint and the control is defined as a modified bang-bang type control. The implications of a number of nonclassical effects on the controlled dynamic response to explosive blast and sonic-boom pressure pulses are discussed and pertinent conclusions are outlined.
