    Abstract

The cavity QED microlaser is a laser based on the ideal model of atoms undergoing well-defined interaction with a single mode of an optical cavity. Due to the coherent nature of the atom-cavity interaction, the microlaser exhibits behavior foreign to conventional lasers. This paper reports the first observation of one of these unusual features, the existence of multiple thresholds. The second and further thresholds can be viewed as first-order phase transition of the field, whereas the initial threshold is of second-order.
