Abstract

The applications and the advantages of GaN-based materials are discussed. The increase of interest in the AlGalnN family of materials is fueled by the application of blue/green/UV light emitting diodes. The features of ultraviolet (UV) optical sources, capable of operation down to 280 nm for use in airborne chemical and biological sensing system, are also discussed. These sources allow direct multi-wavelength spectroscopic identification and monitoring of UV-induced reactions. The advantages of AlGaN-based photodetectors, which can be used for solar-blind UV detection and have applications as flame sensors for control of gas turbines or detection of missiles are also discussed.
