Novel method of removing optical fiber coating with hot air stream

Abstract

A non-contact process to remove optical fiber coating without much degradation of the fiber strength was developed. Under this method, thermal stress is induced on the coating by localized heating using a stream of hot air blown from below. It is possible to remove the coating continuously and uninterrupted by pulling the fiber in the axial direction relative to the heating element and the fan that blows the hot air in the perpendicular direction. Since no chemical agents is used, the rinsing process, as required in conventional methods, is unnecessary. Integrated into the optical fiber device fabrication process, it can also help reduce the possibility of strength degradation due to inappropriate handling of the fiber.
