N2 - Understanding and modeling of SCC in different material-environment system is important for the gas production, transmission, and distribution industry. Prediction of the remaining lifetime of a gas pipe after SCC colony detection requires understanding and quantitative modeling of SCC colony evolution and instability leading to the ultimate rupture. Four stages of SCC colony evolution are distinguished, i.e., the colony initiation stage; one associated with an individual crack growth; multiple crack interaction and formation of axially oriented sub-cluster within clusters of cracks; and interaction and instability of the axial sub-clusters. A discussion covers a numerical modeling of axial sub-cluster formation; and substitution of an equivalent single crack for an axial sub-cluster in the analysis of axial sub-clusters growth and stability.
