Abstract
We use a three-level structure of the 6S - 6P - 6D states of cesium atoms to build an optical trap where the 6S1/2 and the 6P3/2 states have the same ac Stark shift. There is no inhomogeneous broadening of the D2 transition inside the optical trap. The loading rate is increased as a result of improved Doppler cooling. However, the loss rate also increases, and there is no large gain in the number of trapped atoms compared with that of an optical trap with large inhomogeneous broadening. The lifetime and the temperature of the optically trapped atoms also do not depend critically on the broadening of the D2 resonance.
