Abstract

As recording densities grow in magnetic storage, transition-dependent noise becomes more significant. This non-stationary noise degrades the performance of the receivers designed for AWGN channel. A first conclusion is perhaps to derive a new error metric that considers data-dependent noise, and to use a corresponding modified detection scheme that could improve upon the performance of Maximum Likelihood Sequence Detection (MLSD). The theoretical performance for such a modified receiver is analyzed. We conclude that a small improvement can be made when such approaches are used.
