    Abstract

Multimedia services including IPTV require huge multimedia data transmission on the internet. In order to improve a throughput of data transmission, network coding has been proposed to use network bandwidth (=throughput) efficiently. However, when the channel is an erasure channel and the erasure rate is relatively high, we show that network coding can not increase the throughput. Effective erasure recovery codes such as Raptor codes have been researched for many applications including DVB-H and IPTV systems. We consider high throughput multimedia data transmission with a combination of network coding and raptor codes for an erasure channel. We also compare the throughput of network codingwith and without Raptor codes for various channel erasure rates.
