Abstract
After the "golden era" of labor and capital accord "globalization" and "flexibility" have brought drastic changes in the labour market, such as restructuring, deregulation of labor markets, and international shifts in production. These changes are usually accompanied by increased job insecurity and precarious work arrangements. Yet, both the conceptual understanding and empirical evidence on the health effects of employment conditions are limited due to both the scarcity of research and survey data, especially in poor countries. This paper aims 1) to contribute to a better understanding the characteristics and the dimensions of the various types of employment worldwide and 2) to summarize what is known on the relation between health and employment arrangements from available empirical evidence. © 2008
