Abstract
This paper documents an experimental programme that was conducted on four isolated column specimens in order to investigate the transmission of their column loads through floor slabs. These specimens may simulate corner columns since the confining effect of slab for corner columns is not appreciable. The parameter examined in the experimental work was the type of material placed in the corner column-slab joint. The study investigated the effects of these parameters on the ability of the column to transmit column loads through slabs. This paper also presents a new prediction model for the effective compressive strength of corner columns, by making a comparison between the strength of column-slab connections of the specimens and that of brick masonry. The proposed prediction model is verified by comparison with experimental results and various prediction expressions.
