Abstract
In order to improve flow properties of a polyaryleneetherketone with the cardo group (PEK-C), properties of its blends with a thermotropic liquid crystalline (TLC) poly(esterimide)s were studied. TLC-poly(esterimide)s were prepared from hexametheylene bis(trimellitimide acid), dihydroxydiphenyl methanone and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (KPI). Blends of KPI and PEK-C were prepared in a Brabender. Their thermal properties were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Rheological and mechanical properties of the blends were also studied. The results show that melt viscosity of blends decreased significantly when compared with that of matrix. Their mechanical properties were also improved. When the KPI content is over 50% in KPI/PEK-C blends, they showed a phase separation at 340°C into a biphasic morphology consisting of PEK-C islands in the KPI continuous phase. Optical textures observed at different temperatures support the phase separation phenomenon.
