Abstract

A new method for Korean Compound Noun Segmentation is introduced and used to enhance the performance of an information retrieval system. This method indicates that compound nouns are first segmented by using a dictionary and structure patterns. If they are ambiguously segmented, the ambiguities are resolved by using statistical information and a preference rule. By using three kinds of heuristics, compound nouns with unknown unit nouns are segmented.
