The spin-coupling phenomena in a structure comprised of neighboring quantum dots (QD) and quantum wells (QW) was investigated. The magneto-photoluminescence (PL) experiments were carried out on double layer structures separated by a thin ZnSe barrier layer. Circular polarization was used to detect the PL signal and the degree of PL polarization from CdSe QDs in the double layer structures was much larger than that of single layers. The results show that the spin states in the double layer structures of the nonmagnetic QDs are strongly affected by the spins of carriers in the magnetic QW layer by exchange coupling between the two systems.
