Abstract

Fe73Pt5B10Si12 metallic glass was prepared to investigate the crystallization and ensuing changes in magnetic properties of the Fe-rich amorphous alloy. The Fe73Pt 5B10Si12 alloy crystallized at 470°C which was 50°C below the crystallization temperature of the Pt-free Fe 78B10Si12. In addition, the Pt addition led to nucleation of Fe3Pt compound in the final crystallization product of the amorphous alloy. Saturation magnetization of the Fe73Pt 5B10Si12 alloy increased substantially when annealed below the crystallization temperature, which led us believe that the amorphous alloy underwent a structural change. The Pt addition had far reaching effects on the amorphous structure of the Fe-rich glass as well as on the magnetic properties of the annealed alloy.
