Abstract

The synthesis of a novel liquid crystalline methacrylate homopolymer (PBBS) bearing a single multifunctional mesogen with interesting photoactive properties is described. High chromophore-content thermotropic PBBS was obtained by free radical polymerization of the photoactive monomer 2-methacrylic acid 6-[4′-(5-ethanesulfonylbenzoxazol-2-yl)-biphenyl-4-yloxyl]-hexyl ester (MBBS). The MBBS consisted of dipolar 2-biphenylbenzoxazole. PBBS showed excellent thermal stability and exhibited three mesophases. PBBS had the various photoactive functionalities that would be improved by the combination with liquid crystallinity.
