The analysis of the WZW model as a building block of string theories was carried out by Gepner and Witten \[5\].T hey were able to write down the complete spectrum of states of the WZW model consistent with modular invariance. The zero-mass states of the WZW model are particularly relevant to our study, as these states provide possible background fields (as "condensates" of the massless excitations) * Research supported in part by the US Dept. of Energy under contract No. DE-AC02-76-ER03230. ** Present address: Department of Physics, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA.
