    Abstract

The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) integrates over 730,000 biomedical concepts from more than fifty biomedical vocabularies The Metathesaurus is a major resource of the UMLS, containing a large number of concepts. However, it is large complex structure and may still be difficult to view and comprehend. We construct a concept tree based on the complete parent-child relations from concepts in the UMLS Metathesaurus. The complete parent-child relations are represented by a directed graph. We implementedthe UMLS toolbox–a web-based tool to create domain-specific subset and navigate easily on concept tree for the Metathesaurus. The UMLS toolbox offers to help understand to entire biological systems using the concept tree in the UMLS toolbox and create other types of useful domain specific subset. The UMLS toolbox is available online.
