Abstract

Canonical definitions for the vector and the tensor transition polarizabilities, β and γ, respectively, for the transition between the 6S1/2 and the 5D3/2 states of atomic cesium are introduced. Following the definitions, we calculate the polarizabilities to find β = -57 and γ = 362 in atomic units. These numbers are comparable to the scalar and the vector transition polarizabilities between the 6S1/2 and the 7S1/2 states of cesium, which implies the possibility of using the 6S1/2 - 5D3/2 transition for parity nonconservation measurements on trapped cesium atoms.
