Visualization device of living organism through soft X-ray

Abstract

Internal structures of the Anopheline mosquito were visualized using the X-rays generated by a synchrotron accelerator. The X-rays delivered a clear vision of the distinct characteristics of the proboscis located in the head. Dynamics of the terminal segment were particularly apparent. The compound eye consisted of the ommatidia was also detected by the X-rays. In addition, we were able to visualize the hemocoel structures in the antenna and buccal cavity. The reproductive organs and dynamics of the tracheal system under the heart beat were also obtained. Our results suggest that the accelerator can be used as an optimal device in visualizing living organs of Anopheles sinensis, a known malaria transmitter.
