Abstract
This paper describes the yield of 10-Gb/s electroabsorption modulator-integrated distributed-feedback (EAMI-DFB) lasers due to large-signal chirp characteristics. Signals with effective positive chirps (EPCs) of 0.48 Å and 0.24 Å could be transmitted over distances of 40-and 60-km, with less than a 2-dB dispersion power penalty at 10-12 bit error rate (BER), respectively. Therefore, the yield for 40-and 60-km transmissions is defined as the probability of having EPCs less than 0.48 Å and 0.24 Å, respectively. The EPC is calculated from a large-signal dynamic model of EAMI-DFB lasers by using the time-dependent transfer matrix method (TMM). The yield depended highly on κL. The most suitable value of κL was around 1.3 while maintaining low front facet reflectance.
